Song of Solomon 1:5 reveals the words of the Shulamite woman as she described her appearance. She was the betrothed of King Solomon.
I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
-Song of Solomon 1:5 KJV
She refers to the color of her skin and to the fact that she is attractive. This is one reference that Black American women have been able to use as a means to relate to the people in the Bible. She is known to many as “The Shulamite Woman”. She describes herself as “dark”, which is one of the reasons that so many Black women choose to identify with her. It is likely that she was referring to a suntan which resulted from working in the vineyards.
This mug is our tribute to her and to all women of color. They are dark and lovely.
